Toilet construction begins at Maya's house

PALANPUR : Special Olympics gold medalist Maya Devipujak's house will have a toilet within the next couple of days. The work for constructing the facility began on Friday.
"Other residents of the locality will also get the facility soon," said sub-divisional magistrate at Mehsana JB Baraiya. He visited Maya's house along with municipality chief officer RP Joshi and a team of officials to ensure that the work on constructing the toilet was started.
"I have also directed the officials to provide separate a water pipeline connection. We are also requesting the sports authorities in Gujarat government to extend the benefits provided to other outstanding sportspersons to Maya," said Baraiya.
Maya's family has termed the response of the administration to their requirement as a windfall. Mentally challenged Maya was the only girl from Gujarat in the Indian floor hockey team that won gold medal at the Special Olympics held in South Korea in January last year. Her mother sells vegetables on a hand cart and the six-member family is forced to pay Rs 30 daily for the 'pay-and-use' toilet facilities.
Ahmedabad-based Adani Foundation has also extended support to the family.
