Defending champion Samantha Stosur won through to the semi-finals of the Japan Open on Friday, but second seed Madison Keys had to retire.

Top seed Stosur broke twice in each set to beat Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-4 6-1 to continue the defence of her crown.

But US player Keys, who won her first WTA title this year in Eastbourne, was trailing 6-2 4-3 to Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum in their quarter-final clash when injury forced her retirement.

She later wrote on Twitter: "Not how I wanted to end the season but still a good year and now back home to rest up!"

However, there were no such problems for third seed Elina Svitolina, with the Ukraine ace defeating American eighth seed Lauren Davis 6-2 6-4 to set up a last four showdown with Stosur.
