The interim chair of Saolta, formerly the HSE's West/North West Hospital Group, has said a review of Galway University Hospital's implementation of recommendations made following the death of Savita Halappanavar will be published next month.

John Kileen said he expects the review will show that significant progress has been made in bringing in changes recommended by the coroner's Inquest, a HIQA review and the internal HSE investigation into the care provided to Mrs Halappanavar.

The implementation review will be presented at a public board meeting of the hospital group in early November.

Mrs Halappanavar died on 28 October 2012, one week after she was admitted to University Hospital Galway when she was 17 weeks' pregnant and miscarrying.

Her death, five days after she was refused a termination, sparked widespread public debate that eventually forced a controversial change in abortion legislation.
