TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Home Affairs Gamawan Fauzi said the Islamic Defender's Front (FPI) is still registered as a civil society organization until 2019. "I don't know about the one in Jakarta, but it has been nationally registered at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights," said Gamawan earlier today.
The disbandment of a community organization must go through long procedures, according to the minister. First, there must be a request from the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, and then to the court. "The court is the one who has the authority to disband, according to the Community Organization Law," said Gamawan.
Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama planned to disband the anarchic community organizations after the FPI caused riots during a rally against Ahok to become the Jakarta Governor.
Ahok said being in an organization is the right of every person. The people are also protected by the law to voice their opinions. However, the FPI has violated the law by causing riots during demonstration. Ahok then handed over the case to the police.
