A pilgrimage to Dharmasthala turned fatal for three women as the car in which they were travelling collided head on with a KSRTC bus near Murooru Handpost on National Highway 48 on Wednesday morning. Two others were injured.

The deceased are Vinuta (32), a resident of Laggere, Shobha (37), a resident of Vijaynagar, and Preeti Thomas (45) from Banaswadi. The injured are Nithin Chandra (35) and Vinuta’s younger sister Shwetha (24).

Police sources say that Vinutha, a development officer with LIC, was driving. She lost control near Murooru when the car hit a speed breaker, police said. The car crossed over the median and rammed into an oncoming KSRTC bus. The impact was such that the mangled car had to be dismantled to retrieve the bodies.

Vinutha and Shobha, seated in the front, were killed on the spot. Preeti Thomas succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital. Nithin Chandra and Shwetha are undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Nelamangala for severe head injuries.

Vinutha’s husband Vijay Kumar said he saw her off on Wednesday early morning at their home in Laggere and went back to sleep only to be woken up to the news that his wife was no more.

Kudoor police have registered a case.
