Complaining that the GTB Hospital has not been providing medicines to a poor 30-year-old patient suffering from liver, kidney, and HIV problems, Ashok Agarwal, member of the Economically Weaker Section’s Monitoring Committee, has written to the Delhi Health Department to intervene in the matter.
Mr. Agarwal said: “Bittu is an in-patient at the hospital and has liver, kidney, and HIV problems. He has an old widowed mother, who works as a maid and hardly earns Rs. 3,000 a month – the only income for the family. He has two daughters aged six and seven.”
He alleged: “The hospital is not providing the prescribed medicines and his mother has been asked to purchase it from the market, which is not at all possible.”
“Why can’t government hospitals provide the required medicines to the IPD patients free of cost? A probe needs to be initiated into this matter,” said Mr. Agarwal.
Urging the Health Department to take a humanitarian view of the case, the advocate said that the Medical Superintendent should be directed to provide medicines to Bittu free of cost.
“In case any test is required to be done, the same may be done by the hospital at its own cost and his mother should not be asked to get it done from outside the hospital,” he said .
