A cadent of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, was electrocuted and three others injured when the mast of a sailing boat came into contact with an overhead high-tension electric wire on Wednesday.

KANNUR: A cadet of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, was electrocuted and three others injured when the mast of a sailing boat came into contact with an overhead high-tension electric wire on Wednesday.
They were on a training expedition in the Kavvayi backwaters when the accident occurred. INA rescue boats and fishermen in the vicinity shifted the injured to Pariyaram Medical College.
The deceased has been identified as Satveer Singh Ghara of Hoshiarpur in Punjab. The injured, Vaibhav Yadav, Prashant Kumar and Jaswant Singh, were administered first-aid and discharged from the hospital, INA said in a statement.
INA sources said the cadets were sailing from the Watermanship Training Centre to Madakkara around 5pm when the mishap occurred. Though the sailors in the first boat safely crossed the overhead electric wire, the mast of the second boat touched the wire.
There was, however, no clarity on if it was a technical or human error that caused the accident.Sources said more than 10 boats were part of the expedition. The fleet was scheduled to reach Madakkara by evening and continue the training in Arabian Sea on Thursday.

The activity was part of an ongoing training session.

The men were rushed to Pariyaram medical college. The deceased has been identified by the medical college authorities as Sathveer Jhara, while the injured are Vaibhav Yadav, Prashant Kumar and Jaswant Singh, all cadets with the INA.
INA authorities confirmed the mishap, they refused to divulge details. The cadets were rescued by INA rescue boats and local fishermen and were immediately taken to Pariyaram medical college hospital, the INA said.
INA sources said the cadets were going from the Watermanship Training Centre to Madakkara around 5pm in the boats when the accident occurred. Though the sailors in another boat safely crossed the overhead electric wire, the mast of the boat in question touched the wire as it was not lowered.
It is yet to be confirmed whether the error was technical or if it was a lapse on the part of the sailors. Over ten boats took part in the sailing exercise.
The fleet was scheduled to reach Madakkara by evening and continue the training in Arabian Sea on Thursday.
