Bellani stars for St Joseph’s despite playing against doctor’s advice.

Karan Bellani fired St Joseph’s (Malad) to a 1-0 win over Bombay Scottish (Mahim) despite playing with an injured arm. Karan suffered a fracture in his right wrist a month ago while playing football. And just 10 days after the cast was removed, Karan ignored his doctor’s advice and was back on the field.

The 13-year-old’s decision to brave the pain proved to be the difference between winning and losing for St Joseph’s at Azad Maidan yesterday.

Karan scored off a free-kick in the 30th minute to seal victory in the MSSA U-14 inter-school match.

His doctor had advised him to stay away from the sport for at least a month. Karan’s mother also did not approve of him returning to football so soon. “I have been told not to play football for a month, but I could not miss this game. I hope that after today’s result, my mother and doctor will not have a problem with me playing the tournament,” said Bellani.

St Joseph’s coach Arthur Fernandes, meanwhile, said that Karan tricked him into allowing him to play yesterday. “When I told him not to play the game, he said that doctors have allowed him to play.

“I think, this will motivate him more and he is very good in taking decisions. His participation in today’s game helped the team get a good result,” said Fernandes.
