Mumbai: 50-year-old dies after car plunges into creek

The Sion-Panvel highway saw another death on Monday night when 50-year-old Murli Vishwanathan fell victim to reckless riding on this route. Murli Vishwanathan was driving towards Kharghar with his wife and 18-year-old daughter when a biker, driving in the wrong direction, suddenly obstructed his path. To avoid a head-on collision, Murli took a steep turn and the car plummeted into the creek between Kamothe and Kharghar around 10:30 pm

Tragic end: To avoid a head-on collision with a biker, who was riding in the wrong direction, Murli (inset) took a steep turn. The car went off the road and plummeted into the creek between Kamothe and Kharghar

Motorists who witnessed the incident rushed to help the family and managed to rescue the two women. As the car dived straight into the creek, the impact damaged the car’s front portion, making it difficult for Murli to let go of the steering wheel.

“The only thing I remember is that I managed to get out of the car somehow. I couldn’t see my parents because it was dark. We were rushed to the hospital and were told my father would follow soon, but that never happened,” said, Vaishnavi Vishwanathan (18), the daughter of the deceased.

The mother and daughter were taken to the MGM Hospital in Kamothe. Police officials revealed that Murli’s body was fished out only by 4.00 am. A case of accidental death has been registered at the Kamothe police station and the victim’s last rites were performed at a crematorium in Panvel yesterday.

Ramesh Shankar, a relative of the family, said, “Murli had shifted to Kharghar few years ago and was a very helpful person. I had spoken to him just last month and never expected his life to end so soon and so tragically.”
