MUMBAI: Services on the Konkan Railway (KR) were disrupted after derailment of a goods train near Chiplun on Tuesday morning.
Several trains were cancelled, diverted or short-terminated because of the derailment of 12 wagons of the train between Chiplun and Kamathe stations at 7.45 am.
It was the second derailment on the Konkan Railway within two months.
On August 24, a goods trains had derailed at Karanjadi, leading to service disruption for 30 hours.
A KR spokesperson said transhipment of passengers from some trains was also done. “The restoration work is likely to be completed post-midnight on October 8,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said 160 metres of track was damaged, making it tough to determine the accident cause right away.
The KR refunded Rs 8,64,000 to those who cancelled their tickets.
Besides cancellation of trains, there were also diversions through the Panvel-Karjat route. Transshipment arrangements between Chiplun and Kamathe were put in place for a few trains.
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) deployed 40 buses from Chiplun and Ratnagiri from 9 am, transporting 3,000 railway passengers. “The 80 buses of MSRTC will continue to be in operation till the Konkan Railway services are restored,” MSRTC spokesperson Mukund Dhus said.
