In a matter of minutes, there was a huge mood swing among AIADMK workers in Kancheepuram town on Tuesday evening as the initial euphoria soon turned to melancholy.

A bandh-like situation prevailed in the town after the celebration by AIADMK workers watching the `breaking news’ aired in the electronic media that the Bangalore High Court had granted conditional bail to Ms.Jayalalithaa, fizzled out within minutes.

The workers, who had started bursting crackers on Gandhi Road at around 3-50 p.m, found themselves on a sticky wicket within minutes after they realized that the news flashed by the electronic media was not true.

Subsequently, they withdrew their celebrations by abruptly stopping bursting of crackers and shouting slogans in praise of their party supremo. While a group of workers moved around in the Theradi area disillusioned, another group started signalling to the shopkeepers to pull down the shutters.

Karnataka bus targetted

Meanwhile, a private vehicle bearing Karnataka State registration that was passing through Theradi became the target of attack by the AIADMK cadres, who were already raging with anger towards the electronic media which had almost reduced them to a laughing stock in public.

The driver and conductor of a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus plying towards Chennai from Bangalore on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway drove the vehicle straight into the premises of the Sriperumpudur Police Station on the NH around 4.30 p.m seeking protection for the vehicle.

Seven passengers who were on board the vehicle were requested to take Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses to reach Chennai, police said.
