Adrian Lewis admitted he was "shaking like a leaf" during his narrow World Grand Prix first round victory against Daryl Gurney on Monday.

Lewis, the 2010 runner-up at Dublin's Citywest Hotel, narrowly escaped with a 2-1 sets win following a tense encounter with the Northern Irishman.

Having come from a leg down in the deciding set, world No.3 Lewis had to watch his opponent miss three match darts - including a shot on the bull for a maximum 170 finish - before the Stoke ace finally landed double 10 for the match.

"I thought I'd thrown it away at the end, but luckily Daryl missed," Lewis told the PDC's official website. "I didn't expect what he threw at me and I was shaking like a leaf - Daryl kept me under pressure, took out a couple of great finishes and hit some good shots.

"Daryl's a fantastic player and we'll see plenty more of him, but I can take a lot of confidence from that win because I couldn't score much better than that and I had some good finishes."

Lewis had opened the match with a 160 checkout before he replied to Gurney's 100 finish with a 106 to take the opening set. Gurney's brilliant 138 out helped him level the match, before 'Jackpot' came from 1-0 down in the final set only to wire the bullseye for the match in the fourth leg.

Gurney then did the same on his 170 attempt before a further two chances at double eight passed him by, before Lewis finally avoided the upset on double 10.

Phil Taylor cruised through to the second round of the World Grand Prix with a straight sets win over Steve Beaton.

Beaton, the world No.19 who was a semi-finalist in this competition 10 years ago, won just a single leg as defending champion Taylor strolled to a 2-0 victory that included a 180 in the second leg and a 121 checkout to go 2-1 up in the second set.

Two-time winner James Wade also dropped just a single leg as he saw off Andy Smith 2-0. Also going through in straight sets were Robert Thornton and Andrew Gilding, who beat Justin Pipe and Darren Webster respectively.

The upset of the night belonged to world No.45 Mickey Mansell, a 2-0 winner over No.16 Ian White.

Gary Anderson was another comfortable winner, getting past Brendan Dolan 2-0, while Kevin Painter, who will take on Lewis in the second round, needed three legs to beat Andy Hamilton.
