Yesterday, despite the hot hot heat, thousands of people took to the streets on bikes, skateboards, penny-farthings, a giant tricycle operated by at least four people pedaling simultaneously, and their own two feet to enjoy the 10-mile Heart of LA CicLAvia route—the first to go beyond Los Angeles's borders (into East LA). CicLAvia, which shuts the streets down to car traffic for one glorious day every so often, is a chance for kids to ride their bikes for the first time, for bikes (or their riders) to get dressed up in costumes, and for all kinds of car-free shenanigans, so it's never short on great images (like ones of the aforementioned crazy giant tricycle). We've rounded up some of the most dynamic photos and videos of the event—including a time-lapse that'll take you through the route in just a few minutes—so even if you missed out yesterday, you'll still be able to catch the greatest hits.

Despite the #heat yesterday, more than 50,000 people were expected to participate in the city's largest cycling-centric event, which closed streets from Echo Park to the East Los Angeles Civic Center and included stops in the Broadway Theater District, Boyle Heights and Chinatown in celebration of both public spaces and public gatherings. The next CicLAvia event will be on Sunday, December 7, 2014. #tunnel #2ndstreettunnel #dtla #losangeles #la #city #bike #bikeride #echopark #eastla #boyleheights #chinatown #broadway #nocars #bike #party #citywide #fun @ciclavia
