GHMC had paid for barricades

GHMC officials said that the fault was with contractor Raj Kumar
Hyderabad: As the police began investigations into the manhole death of senior citizen Hemanth Kumar Sahay, 66, GHMC officials said that the fault was with contractor Raj Kumar. Though Raj Kumar was paid the full amount for the work including for precautionary measures, he did not do so. Mr Sahay died after he fell into a manhole at Himayatnagar late on Sunday night.
“At the time of signing the contract payment was made for all expenses including barricades. Though we don’t provide material he was paid to arrange them,” said Dr N. Yadagiri, deputy commissioner, GHMC central zone (Circle 9).
The engineers also approached the police with their explanation. Field engineer Sucharitha told the police that the contractor was warned more than once.
“She said that the precautionary measures were mentioned as mandatory in the notice given to the contractor. A fortnight ago a reminder was sent too,” said SI G. Jagannadh.
The police had earlier registered a case under Section 174 and said it may be altered after the investigation. GHMC officials said they would hold an internal inquiry and action will be initiated against those responsible. Sources said the contractor ignored locals when they asked him to cover the manholes and take measures to prevent accidents.
