B M Kaval Residents Welfare Association offers prizes for segregation to enthuse local contract BBMP workers, drivers

While prime minister Narendra Modi has picked up the broom to sweep away the country’s filth, a bunch of Indiranagar residents has resorted to an innovative competition to counter the garbage challenge of the city.

To clean their ward (80), the B M Kaval Residents Welfare Association has planned a competition involving all the local contractual BBMP workers. They have declared a six-month competition for pourakarmikas, garbage truck and auto drivers and garbage supervisors.

The participants will be judged mainly on four skills – segregating dry and wet waste, educating residents on the waste segregation, ability to sell dry waste to Dry Waste Collection Centres and regular attendance. Two best drivers and two best pourakarmikas will get prize of Rs 5,000 each. More than 30 staff, including pourakarmikas, drivers and supervisors, are participating in the competition.

Synphia Andrade, a resident, said, “We declared the competition for the period between October and March. Waste segregation is our priority. We insisted that the dry waste should be collected and disposed of or sold through proper means.”

The residents hope that the prize money could be a good incentive for the participants in making the ward a garbage-free ward in the city. “We hope to start sending only wet waste for composting to Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC). At this point, we are not sure how successful this endeavour will be. However, it is our shot at making Indiranagar garbage free,” adds Andrade.

Another resident Kusum Simon added, “After setting up a proper channel to send the waste to the Dry Waste Collection Centre, we decided the next logical step is to move towards zero mixed waste. Hence, it was imperative that we involve the staff on ground such as pourakarmikas, lorry drivers, auto drivers and garbage supervisors.”

The pourakarmikas and the other participants are also showing additional interest in the competition. One of the Pourakarmikas, Bhudevi, said, “It is nice to see residents not just encouraging us to work hard but are rewarding us for that bit of hard work too. It also shows there involvement and care for keeping the environment clean.

“Waste segregation is their priority too. It will be easier for us to dispose the garbage if waste is segregated at the household itself. In every ward the residents should encourage workers with such activities. Even we are going to give our best rather than working just for wages,” she said.
