GAYA: Wisakhana, a 28-year-old student of postgraduate department of Buddhist Studies in Magadh University (MU) committed suicide by hanging himself from the ventilator of a room in the Foreigners’ Hostel on MU premises.
A native of Myanmar, Wisakhana committed suicide sometime on Saturday night and his body was retrieved on Sunday morning.
Sita Ram Singh, Dean Students Welfare, MU, said a suicide note written in Burmese language has been recovered.
In the note, the student held himself responsible for his tragic end as he wanted to give up this world. The note did not give the reasons why the student, who earlier got baptised as a monk and was found wrapped in robes, wanted to quit the world. Asked about reports that the deceased student was under unauthorised occupation of room, the DSW said the hostel superintendent was out of the headquarters and he was not in a position to make an official comment.
Wisakhana's body was later sent to ANMMCH, Gaya, for post- mortem. The Burmese embassy has been officially informed about the incident. The body is likely to be preserved in the ANMCH mortuary till a final decision is taken on the last rites of the student. According to the Bodh Gaya DSP Satish Kumar, a case of unnatural death has been lodged with the MU PS. He did not suspect any foul play. Sushil Singh, HoD, Buddhist Studies, said he had come to know that Wisakhana, earlier suffered from some mental ailment.
Asked about the classroom behaviour of the student, Singh said it did not entirely fall in the normal category as Wisakhana mostly kept to himself
