Aju Varghese is in a happy phase now. He is acting with the director who launched him, Vineeth Sreenivasan, while his looks in various films are hits in the virtual world. Excerpts from a conversation with the most loved actor of Mollywood currently:
In Anvar Sadik’s Ormayundo Ee Mugham, you act alongside Vineeth Sreenivasan, who directed you in Thattathin Marayathu… The film is in its last schedule now.
It is a light romantic comedy with a simple story. I play an employee in a private company where Vineeth’s character works, which is owned by his mother. Gradually we grow very close. I feel lucky to be acting alongside him. Vineeth is my guru and the one who brought me to the limelight. My career right now is a dream come true because of him. We were both part of the cast in Om Shanti Oshana but didn’t have combination scenes. But there are plenty in Ormayundo Ee Mugham. He is very calm as an actor.
The entire cast of Vellimoonga is celebrating. How do you feel? Malayalis will always remain Malayalis in their heart of hearts; their likes and dislikes too will remain unchanged. The film recreated their favoured dialogues and situations and its success shows how Malayalis are missing them. It was also one of the films which you don’t want to finish shooting for; we all enjoyed it that much.
Your moustache in the film was also much discussed? The shoot of the film happened just after my wedding and so I had no time to grow my moustache properly. But Jibu, the director, asked me to retain it as such, saying he wanted just a podimeesha (small moustache) for my character. What I learnt from Jibu is that at the end of the day, you should trust your director.
Your avatar look in Peruchazhi was a hit in social networking sites... The entire credit goes to the make-up man. In the film, for our burglary mission, Lalettan was to be superman, Baburaj King Kong, and me, avatar. The scenes were shot in the plush residence of a TV actor at Beverly Hills, at an exorbitant rent, some 6000-7000 dollars per day. The only condition was that we shouldn’t spoil the interiors. And there was me with the paint all over. We had a tough time not to leave stains on the marble floor. It took four-five days to get the paint off me entirely but the effort was worth it.

What next? Heard that you have also done a short film Unnimoolam? I have signed for a few films but don’t want to talk about them as of now. Lal Bahadur Shashtri is my next release, where I play Shashtri. It is a tale of three strangers who meet during a journey but it is a lighthearted entertainer at its core. It has been directed by a debutante, just like Vellimoonga.
And yes, Unnimoolam is my fifth short film. It has also been directed by a debutant, Vipin Das, and is about someone who is too superstitious, named Unni. His naalu is Moolam. It’s a simple film which mocks at superstitions and will be released online soon.I enjoy doing short films. We have such talented young directors and short films are the best platform for them to showcase their talent and learn on the way. I feel all aspiring directors should make use of it, before asking producers to invest lakhs or crores in them. today’s debutant directors are so talented I’m sure they will be big names tommorrow.
