The women’s wing of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) will conduct a special ‘yagam’ at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Monday praying for the early release of the party leader Jayalalithaa from the Bangalore prison.

Since the Karnataka High Court will hear her bail plea on October 7, the party’s women functionaries have decided to seek “divine intervention” on that day by conducting a yagam from 7 a.m. in the temple with 54 ‘Sivachariars.’

This was announced at a protest fast organised at Munichalai Junction here in which women Members of Parliament, women Mayors, women councillors and wives of party leaders participated.

Party MPs L. Sasikala Pushpa and Vijila Sathyananth lamented that “a great leader in the country” had been imprisoned in a “false case” foisted on her by political rivals, over which people were expressing their anguish.

“We see this as a revenge for the massive political victory Ms. Jayalalithaa secured in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Definitely justice will win in this country,” Ms. Sathyananth said.

She also objected to the DMDK president and Opposition Leader Vijayakant’s statement that law and order was in a crisis due to protests by AIADMK cadre. “The attempts by opposition parties to take advantage of the situation will be foiled,” she added.

Ms. Sasikala Pushpa observed that Ms. Jayalalithaa was a victim of judicial activism. Tuticorin Mayor A.P. R. Anthony Grace expressed confidence that their leader would emerge victorious in the coming days. Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and wives of various Ministers and party leaders were present.
