Manju may get silver in hammer throw as Zhang tests positive

Last Updated 04 October 2014, 18:31 IST

India’s hammer thrower Manju Bala is set to win the silver medal after gold medal winner Zhang Wenxui of China failed a dope test.

“Zhang Wenxiu’s urine specimen collected on September 26 (under pre-competition testing) was found to contain Zeranol and its metabolite (ß-Zeranol), a prohibited substance in the WADA Prohibited List 2014.  This substance is a non-specified substance under category S1.2 Other Anabolic Agents of the list,” a statement from the OCA Medical Committee & Anti-Doping Commission Dr M Jegathesan said.

Zhang, whose gold medal has been withdrawn and accreditation cancelled, has asked for a B-Sample testing and if that too tests positive for dope, the OCA will cancel her medal. Zhang’s compatriot Zheng Wang finished second while Manju came third. Zhang is the second gold medallist at the Games to test positive for a banned substance after Malaysia's wushu champion Tai Cheau Xuen was disqualified on Tuesday for testing positive for sibutramine, a banned stimulant often found in weight-loss pills.

In other instances, Cambodian soft tennis player Yi Sophany tested positive for sibutramine while Tajikistan football player Khurshed Beknazarov was sent home when tests revealed the presence of the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.

Iraqi weightlifter Mohammed Jasim Abboo Al Aifuri and Syrian karate competitor Nour Aldin Al-Kurdi tested positive for using performance enhancing drugs. Samples from 1600 athletes were taken during the course of the Games with a total of six failing the tests.
