There was a rush for registration of new vehicles on the occasion of Vijaya Dashmi, with more than the average number of two-wheelers and cars queuing up on Friday.

    How many vehicles queued up?

According to the numbers available from the three Regional Transport Office (RTO) centres across the city, a total 505 two-wheelers and 115 cars got certificates on the day and the department was richer by more than Rs1 crore by way of registration charges.

Why do business on a holiday?

Dassera is a public holiday, but some government offices like the RTO and registration department of the revenue department for properties stay open as many families seek to complete the registration process on this auspicious day.

Gudi Padva is another auspicious day on which people choose to complete such work.

    What does the govt gain?

"There are people who prefer booking a vehicle on this day and those who choose to get them registered at the RTOs. Different people have different ways to celebrate the festival and bring joy into their lives," said a senior official at the Tardeo RTO.

The RTO at Andheri in the western suburbs registered the maximum number of vehicles and consequently collected the highest revenue for this at Rs39.53 lakh. In the eastern suburbs the RTO earned Rs37.53 lakh and at Tardeo the office collected Rs23.89 lakh.

    What happened on Gudi Padva?

There was a similar rush on Gudi Padwa this year, when a total 575 new vehicles were registered at the three RTOs. The department collected Rs2.20 crore as charges. The maximum number of vehicles registered on that day was again at the Andheri RTO.
