JAIPUR: The police, forest department officers and villagers had a horrifying time while playing hide-and-seek with a crocodile for 24 hours after it dragged a 40-year-old woman into Chambal river in Karauli's Karanpur area on Wednesday. After great efforts, some part of the body could be retrieved from the crocodile on Friday.
According to the police, the incident took place at Ashthal Ghat of Chambal around noon on Wednesday.
The victim, Ramkatori Meena, was grazing cattle and had come to the bank for drinking water when a crocodile dragged her into the river.
"Some others who were also grazing cattle saw the incident and informed the police. A police team and forest officers reached the spot within half an hour," said SHO, Karanpur, Sahiram Yadav.
Villagers told the police that crocodiles usually get to the bottom of the river after catching the prey and come to the surface to eat it after some time when there is no one around.
"We waited behind bushes for half-an-hour until the crocodile appeared. We tried to follow it in a boat, but it disappeared again. The teams looked for the body in the evening and had to give up due to dark,' said the officer.
The officer added that the prey led to a fight among some crocodiles following which they came to the surface on Saturday morning. "Some villagers snatched some parts of the body. Only head and some parts of torso could be saved," said the officer. The police handed over the body to family members after postmortem.
