Irvine urges Berahino patience

Cape Town - West Brom manager Alan Irvine has urged Saido Berahino to stay patient as he waits for a first senior call-up for England.

Berahino has been in fine form for the Baggies so far this season, scoring four goals in the club's first six Premier League appearances.

Many believed the 21-year-old Brundi-born striker had done enough to earn his first call-up for the Three Lions, but Roy Hodgson has instead opted for Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney and Rickie Lambert as his strike options for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

And while Irvine is not surprised the youngster will not be involved during the upcoming international break, he is confident it wont be long before Berahino gets the nod.

"I wasn’t surprised he wasn’t named in the full squad - I’d have been more surprised if he had been," Irvine is quoted as saying by the Birmingham Mail.

"He’s a young player who’s doing really well at the moment and has great potential. I’d expect one day he’ll become a full international. But I didn’t really expect Roy to to select him this time.

"He knows him well, he’ll pick him when he’s ready. He’ll know when the time is right."

Irvine will be hoping Berahino can find the back of the net against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, October 4. The match kicks off at 16:00.
