The Asian Games 2014 are set to kick off from Incheon, South Korea, on Friday, September 19. There will be an opening ceremony at 6 pm Korean Standard Time (2:30 pm IST). Several acts are planned for the grand ceremony, which will be followed by the games starting September 20.
439 events encompassing 36 sports will be held during the Games, which end on October 4.
The 679-strong Indian contingent is already at Incheon to take part in the Games. India's hockey captain Sardar Singh will be the flag-bearer for the opening ceremony, after several Indian athletes refused the honour.
The schedules for a number of events have already been announced.

Swimming is a popular sport around the world. Click here for the swimming events schedule
Canoeing, rowing and sailing are three different things, though many people mistake them to be similar. All three have found a place at the Asian Games as sports events. Click here for the schedule.
Moving on to the Indian contingent, Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa will represent India in squash.
A number of Indian athletes have however made news this time for deciding NOT to participate in the Games.
Indian shuttler Jwala Gutta has been ruled out of the Games due to an injury, striking a body blow to India's hopes in the event.
Tennis star Leander Paes will skip the Asian Games, instead choosing to focus on improving his world ranking. He however is not the first Indian tennis player to decide to skip the Asian Games. Somdev Devvarman had already announced his decision earlier.
Somdev's decision did not go down well with the All India Tennis Association.
Sania Mirza, who had earlier decided not to participate either, changed her mind after a few days.
There is happy news for India on the boxing front as London Olympics bronze medalist Mary Kom has qualified for the Games.
It was not always so clear for Indian boxers however. Their participation became possible only after AIBA gave recognition to a new Indian body called Boxing India.
Indian footballers also faced uncertainty for a time, awaiting clearance from the Sports Ministry. However, on September 9, the ministry finally gave its approval.
The most exciting news however is that in hockey, India and Pakistan are placed in the same group, thus making a clash inevitable.
Controversies
The 2014 Asian Games have not been devoid of controversies however. Heavy security presence marked the arrival of North Korean athletes at the Asian Games. South Korea on its part, reminded its citizens about the ban on carrying a North Korean flag, exacerbating the controversy.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian football player has been charged with sexual harassment in Incheon, necessitating his expulsion from the country's squad, on which there is no official word yet.
The Asian Games this year are struggling with filling up arenas, with tickets going unsold days before the event.
We will keep updating this space today during and after the opening ceremony, as well as during the course of the Games themselves. For full coverage of the Asian Games 2014, click here
