COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Marine Corps and United States Special Operations Command volleyball teams challenged each other on the court at the 2014 Warrior Games hosted at the U.S. Olympic Training Center here, Sept. 30.

SOCOM did not let the Marines undefeated streak intimidate them, in fact, this only pushed them to try even harder.

The SOCOM team gave the Marines a run for their money during the first quarter of the match, but the Marines did not underestimate their opponents taking the first game 25-21.

“Having us as a team being able to challenge [the Marine Corps team] better than some of the other teams says a lot about our learning curve and our abilities to buy into the team plays,” said Greg Walker, coach of the SOCOM volleyball team.

SOCOM may not have won the match, but they did win the respect and admiration of the Marines.

“I though the SOCOM team was pretty good,” said Benjamin McCrosky, a Marine Corps volleyball team player. “I thought they exceeded their expectations.”

The Marines and SOCOM teams demonstrated great teamwork during the second match, but the Marines appeared to have the advantage of more experience working together over the SOCOM team.

“It’s actually kind of funny because I was the lead coach for the Marine Corps trials,” said Walker. “I actually spent a little over two and a half weeks with the Marines training them, which is great because they didn’t go backwards. They built on what we did, and it was awesome.”

SOCOM is the only team in the competition that has players from different branches, but they are also the team with the least amount of hands-on practice with the sport.

However, according to the SOCOM coach, they will be a team to be reckoned with next year.
