Lochte hits out at 'dumb' Phelps decision

Ryan Lochte has hit out at Michael Phelps for bringing his sport into disrepute - but insists his rival is "like family" and deserves his criticism.

Phelps was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol before immediately issuing a apology.

When asked if he was concerned for his Team USA team-mate, Lochte said: "I'm not concerned - he just makes dumb decisions."

He added: "He has so much money to get a driver. I even have a driver. It just stinks for the sport of swimming.

"But he will become smarter from this. Luckily he did not hurt himself or someone else."

Following his comments, Lochte took to Twitter to clear up any misunderstanding regarding the tone used.

He wrote: "Michael is like a little brother to me (a little bro who can swim faster than me) so I reacted the way family reacts, saying You know better! My tone was misunderstood, cuz that guy is #family"
