Politicians: buy some doggie love

People love dogs. Politicians? Not so much.

And no wonder. Dogs don't fill your e-mail with breathless solicitations for money.

Besides, I can't think of a single politician I'd like to take for a walk after dinner. They are way too needy and hard to clean up after.

Nevertheless, there is an opportunity those popularity-hungry political candidates ought to seize.

Instead of boring us to tears with more muddier-than-thou ads, how about spending the next million in dark money on helping shelter animals? Or groups that train therapy dogs? Or buying a decade's worth of food for a local no-kill cat shelter. Yes, even cats are more popular than politicians.

Imagine the bounce from helping Bowser and Fluffy!

Oops!

I guess that would be illegal candidate coordination with an independent expenditure committee.

Well, then, the dark money boys and girls will just have to find a way to give the candidate credit without the candidate knowing. Wink, wink. I won't tell.

Maybe they can just list the opponents who didn't do anything to help dogs or cats.

Woof, woof.

Wouldn't it be swell if all that money pouring into politics actually accomplished something worthwhile? Meow, meow.
