Officers from the South Lampung Police narcotics division and the Bakauheni Port Police Station (KSKP) foiled an attempt to smuggle crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, and ecstasy pills in the port'€™s passenger examination area at 12:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

South Lampung Police precinct head Adj. Sr. Comr. Bayu Aji said the police confiscated the drugs from suspect Ahmad Affan, 33, a resident of Biang Seunibong sub-district, Langsa district, Langsa, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam.

'€œThe shabu-shabu weighs 5 kilograms, while 49,974 confiscated ecstasy pills were wrapped in plastic,'€ he said in a press conference at the South Lampung Police precinct headquarters on Wednesday.

Bayu said the suspect had attempted to smuggle the drugs by hiding them in two backpacks, which were stored in the baggage compartment of the Putra Pelangi bus on which he was travelling.

'€œDuring interrogation, the suspect said his friend, Hermansyah [who is still at large and on the police alert list], entrusted the shabu-shabu and ecstasy pills to him and he was ordered to give them to someone in Jakarta,'€ said Bayu.

He further said Ahmad left from Pekan Baru and had been promised Rp 20 million (US$1,646.23) if he could deliver the drugs to the receiver in Jakarta.

The police will charge Ahmad with Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. '€œIf proven guilty, he could face the death penalty or imprisonment of between six and 20 years, and a maximum fine of Rp 10 billion,'€ said Bayu.

Earlier, the South Lampung Police busted Safrizal, 37, for attempting to smuggle 900 grams of crystal meth in an operation on Monday evening.

Safrizal, a resident of Tanjung Mulia sub-district, Medan Deli district, Medan, North Sumatra, attempted to smuggle the crystal meth from Medan to Jakarta by hiding it in a belt worn around waist. (ebf)
