ATP Japan Open: Kei Nishikori too good for Ivan Dodig in Tokyo

Kei Nishikori advanced to the second round of the Japan Open in Tokyo after beating Ivan Dodig in straight sets on Wednesday.

The US Open runner-up and fourth seed in his home country this week faced just the one break point in the match against the Croat, eventually winning 6-3 6-4.

In the next round he will face Donald Young, who beat another Japanese player Go Soeda on Tuesday.

Earlier, Steve Johnson overcame Marcel Granollers to advance to the quarter-finals, although the American needed to call on all his reserves against the Spanish player, eventually winning 4-6 6-3 6-4.

In more first round action on Wednesday, Gilles Simon also came from a set down to beat Gilles Muller 4-6 7-6 6-3, while Jack Sock advanced after beating Andrey Golubev 6-3 1-6 7-5.

The day's final match saw Benjamin Becker beat Tatsuma Ito 6-3 6-3.
