Dual clutch transmission from Eaton promises 10% fuel improvement01 October 2014

Eaton has developed a new line of medium-duty dual clutch transmissions which, it says, will deliver up to 10% more fuel economy than a similarly equipped vehicle with a torque converter automatic.

Called Procision, the seven-speed transmissions feature a dual clutch design and electronic shifting that uses grade, vehicle weight and throttle input to optimise fuel efficiency and, says Eaton, deliver smooth torque to the vehicle's wheels under all shift conditions.

The dual clutch module is fully contained within the transmission, hydraulically controlled and oil-cooled for extended life. A five-spring damper is used to control torsional vibrations and is sealed to eliminate contamination.

Features such as Eaton Dynamic Shifting also allow the transmission to automatically switch between economy and performance shift schedules, dependent on mass, gradient and driver demand.

Base shift results are modified dynamically according to available torque, engine acceleration and inclination.

Economy and performance shift tables can be adjusted and calibrated to meet any operator's specific requirements, and Eaton says that this calibration flexibility is its most comprehensive ever.

Other features include 'Urge to Move' and 'Creep Mode', as well as 'Hill Helper' to prevent movement for up to three seconds while on gradients of up to 8%.

Procision has been designed for class 6 and 7 vehicles in North America, where it will be launched in the middle of 2015, followed by a global roll out.
