Two Austrian climbers have died following a 400-metre fall on the Grossglockner mountain in East Tyrol on Tuesday, ORF reported.

One of the climbers, 49 years old, was killed immediately, while his 56-year-old climbing partner was transported via helicopter to a hospital in Lienz where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The two climbers from the state of Carinthia begun their ascent of the southern side of the 3,798-metre-tall mountain in the morning, the accident occurring when they attempted to scale a 45-degree section of firn snow.

An alpine police officer observed the fall and immediately alerted emergency services crews. The deceased climber also transported from the scene via police helicopter.

The actual cause of the fall is as yet unclear, with the inquiries of the alpine police not yet complete. Endit
