LED bulbs to replace conventional lights

EECL ties up with APSPDCL to set up power houses in Guntur

August 26, 2014 01:07 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:04 pm IST - GUNTUR:

High energy consuming incandescent bulbs may be a thing of past, as LED lights are set to replace them under a project undertaken jointly by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and the APSPDCL in Guntur district.

Under the project, 20 lakh LED bulbs will be distributed across APSPDCL counters from October. Each bulb costs just Rs.10, and the consumer will have to bring his power consumption receipt and the old incandescent bulbs.

“We are keen to start the project from October and ensure that 20 lakh LED bulbs are distributed over six months. Power consumption is going to drastically come down by using 7-10 watts LED bulbs. Each LED bulb has a shelf life of 50,000 hours,” said P. Anil Kumar, senior consultant, EECL, New Delhi, said on Monday.

At a meeting with senior APSPDCL officers at the office of Superintendent Engineer, Guntur, on Monday, the EECL consultants explained through a presentation the energy saving model.

With Andhra Pradesh already being a power-deficit State, the EECL hopes for a turnaround in energy saving in a few years.

Ch. Rajabapaiah, Chief Engineer, APSPDCL, Vijayawada and K. Santhosh Rao, SE, Guntur, were present.

“Power saving through LED bulbs will be huge. For instance, LED bulb consumes just 52 watts per unit, and 7-10 watt LED bulb would emit sufficient luminosity equal to 100 watt conventional bulb. LED bulbs are easier to be disposed of than conventional CFL lamps,” said Mr. Anil Kumar.

The EECL is a public sector unit under the Ministry of Power, New Delhi, formed under the Energy Conservation Act four years ago. It was set up to give a fillip to mission to save power and increase energy efficiency.
