A series of awareness programmes including talks, health camps, essay writing and paintings marking World Heart Day were organised by city hospitals on Monday.

Apollo Hospitals launched ‘Healthy Heart Challenge’ encouraging individuals to undergo health checks and suggestions from expert doctors on necessary lifestyle modifications.

The hospital authorities said that the challenge also includes a certificate, which is issued after the heart check up.

“Even after the certification, if the individual suffers a heart attack during this year, the hospital has also offered to treat them free of cost,” a hospital statement said. Heart surgeons from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) demonstrated Artificial Heart, HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD). The device roughly the size of a golf ball sits inside the chest and is connected directly to the heart. “The device helps pump blood from heart to starving organs, allowing patients to live longer and with a dramatically improved quality of life,” KIMS hospital doctors said.

Care outpatient centre organised a painting competition and exhibition for the school children, a hospital press release from added. “Patients should watch out for what they eat, exercise regularly and quit smoking at any cost to avoid heart ailments.

Following a heart-healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated, and it doesn’t mean one needs to live a life of self-deprivation. Instead, patients should find ways to incorporate heart-healthy habits into lifestyle,” C. T. surgeon G.Rama Subramanyam in a statement said.
