Mumbai witnessed its hottest September day since 1950 on Monday, with the maximum temperature reaching 37 degree Celsius at Santacruz.

Monday’s temperature also broke the all-time record of hottest September day of 36.4 degrees Celsius recorded on September 23, 1972, and officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) have warned that such high temperatures, around 35 degrees, will continue for the next 2-3 days as well.

Dominance of land breeze and high humidity was responsible for the ‘unbearable heat’ experienced by Mumbaikars, said K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general of meteorology, IMD Mumbai.

“During monsoon, winds are westerly and come from the Arabian sea, but for the past 2-3 days, Mumbai is getting easterly to south easterly winds from the land side right up to 1pm. The city has not experienced rainfall in more than a week and sudden high temperature, typical of transition month like October,  makes the weather unbearable.”

The maximum at Santacruz on Monday was 5.5 degrees above normal, while the maximum temperature at Colaba on Monday was 34.8 degrees Celsius, 3.6 degrees above normal. On Monday, Santacruz experienced a minimum of 26.6 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees above normal, whereas at Colaba, the minimum temperature recorded on Monday was 27.5 degrees Celsius, 2.6 degrees above normal.
