Coimbatore: Navarathri celebrations at Isha Foundation in Poondi hills is on at full swing. Thappattam, kavadi and karagam dances were performed at the Linga Bhairavi temple on September 28, the fourth day of Navrathri.
The concert was followed by a lively and vibrant procession of the Linga Bhairavi processional deity around the parikrama of Dhyanalinga. Beginning at the Linga Bhairavi, the highlight of the procession was the fire dance performed as an arati in front of the Dhyanalinga.
Kavadi aattam, a folk art performed only by men, in worship of Lord Murugan, was also a feast. When the ancient Tamils went on a pilgrimage, they carried offerings to the gods tied on either end of a long stick, which was balanced on the shoulders.
Thappaattam, an ancient rural folk art, is a subtle form of dance accompanied by captivating music and an instrument called thappu. Thappaattam is popular even today in villages in Tamil Nadu.
Sukraa Innovative Dancers a dance company founded by Sundaramoorthy performed the dances. Sundaramoorthy is a professional dancer trained in many Indian dance styles, world folk dances and modern dances.Navrathri is a period of great festivity at the Linga Bhairavi temple.
