SPRINGDALE, Utah, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The body of a California man trapped in a canyon by a swollen river during a weekend hike in Zion National Park was found downstream the next day.

David Yoshi Vo, 34, of Westminster was on a weekend hike with a male friend, rangers at the Utah park said. The two men ended up on opposite sides of the Virgin River in Zion Canyon when a heavy rainstorm Saturday morning caused a sudden flood.

David Eaker, a park spokesman, said the noise of the swollen river prevented the two from communicating. According to park rangers, the flow increased from 46 cubic feet per second before the storm to 4,020 CFS afterwards.

After waiting most of the day for the river to drop, the friend swam out in late afternoon. He told rangers he left Vo on high ground apparently safe.

The search had to be delayed until Sunday morning because of the flooding. Vo was not in the spot where his friend reported last seeing him, but his body was found several miles downstream in the afternoon.
