Updated 2016 Cadillac ELR Electric Coupe For LA Auto Show

While much of the electric-car world is anticipating the next Chevy Volt, which will launch in January, GM's other range-extended electric car will be getting some changes before then.

According to Edmunds, an updated 2016 Cadillac ELR will debut in November at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Cadillac spokesperson David Caldwell confirmed the debut to Edmunds on Monday, saying the revised ELR would have unspecified "engineering enhancements."

He declined to provide any details on those enhancements.

Many analysts attribute this to the price, which starts at $75,000.

Five-figure incentives have already been offered on the ELR by some dealers.

Edmunds points out that technically there is no 2015 model year for the ELR.

[UPDATE: Cadillac's David Caldwell subsequently explained to Green Car Reports that Cadillac had always planned for such an unusual cadence, based on the long-anticipated shutdown of the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to add a new, larger Cadillac CT6 model.

"All along ELR production was slated to commence in January and continue for about half the calendar year, then it would pause for some period of time (at least a few months) while the plant received its upgrades," Caldwell said, and also adjusted to demand for the other cars built there.

"Obviously, ELR does not really define the plant’s schedule in general as it’s a niche product," he added.]
