QuestionPro Finds 82% of Millennials Think They Could Have Skipped College and Taken MOOCs Instead

QuestionPro, Inc. released the results of its online versus traditional education survey. The company surveyed Americans on their knowledge and perception regarding the various choices available for education, mainly Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). 25-34 year-olds were more likely than any other age group to have heard about MOOCs (73% ages 25-34 versus 26% ages 35-44). 25-34 year-olds were also more likely to register for MOOCs within the next 12 months (94% somewhat – extremely likely).

Other findings from the survey included:

  • Among those 25-34, the primary reason for registering for a MOOC was to “prepare for a career,” as opposed to most other age groups taking a MOOC “just for fun.”
  • Respondents answered differently when asked about MOOCs versus “online education” – most adults stated online education is “somewhat effective or just as effective compared to a classroom experience,” although MOOCs were thought to be a better experience than classroom education.
  • When asked whether an undergraduate education could be replaced by MOOCs, 82% of adults ages 25-34 felt it could be entirely replaced, whereas only 57% of adults aged 35-44 felt the same.
  • In terms of a graduate education, 79% of adults aged 25-34 felt that 60-100% of MOOCs could replace it entirely, whereas only 55% of adults aged 35-44 felt the same.
