An exhibition entitled People of India is on show at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry. It charts the work of three generations of photographers through images taken around India over the past 150 years.

Jason Scott Tilley's photographic portraits from India were taken between 1999 and 2009, and reflect a personal view of people he met during his journey around the country.

"These sometimes very brief encounters - or in many cases re-encounters with people I had known for a number of years - were made with very little direction from me," said Mr Scott Tilley. "I simply sought to capture an essence of their spirit as I found them."

The exhibition also features images by Mr Scott Tilley's grandfather, the Anglo Indian press photographer Bert Scott, who worked for The Times of India until the 1940s.

Some of Bert Scott personal pictures, such as this photograph of Margaret Mumford, are also on show in Coventry.

A third set of images on show is drawn from a 19th Century photographic collection, on loan from the Library of Birmingham, which has also supported Mr Scott Tilley's project.

One of the contributors to the Library of Birmingham's collection was the Reverend E Godfrey, a distant relative of Mr Scott Tilley, bringing the exhibition full circle.
