Ruling party supporters target the house and rice mill of former Pudukottai MP

A group of supporters of the AIADMK went on a rampage in the town shortly after hearing the verdict of the Special Court in Bangalore which convicted Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case.

The district party office of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on North Main Street bore the brunt with the AIADMK workers throwing stones at a number of glass panels at its entrance.

Another group of angry protesters barged in to the office of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) at Lakshmipuram near the bus stand here and ransacked it, damaging whatever came their way. They damaged the library, air-conditioner, and electrical fittings and furniture.

S.K. Kathiravan, district treasurer of the party. has lodged a complaint against S.A.S. Sait, municipal vice-chairman, with the Town Police in connection with the incident.

On the West Fourth Street, violence broke out when a group of supporters of the AIADMK damaged the houses of the late K. Veeraiah, former MP of Pudukottai. The protesters damaged a modern rice mill belonging to the family of the former MP located in the commercial complex besides the residence.

Seven party men who attempted to trespass into the railway station to block trains were stopped by the police and removed from the spot.

The bus stands in Pudukottai and Aranathangi were deserted with the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation withdrawing its bus services. The liquor outlets run by TASMAC were closed immediately.

Effigy burnt

AIADMK supporters burnt the effigies of DMK president M. Karunanidhi and BJP leader Dr. L. Subramanian Swamy in Pudukottai.
