KOCHI: When Muthuraj, Ravindran and Murukar Swamy left Kochi for Tamil Nadu , little did they know that they would be forced to stay back in the neighbouring state for a longer period of time. While Muthuraj, a resident of Ayyappankavu went to Chennai, Ravindran from Pulleppady had gone to Madurai and Murukar Swamy - who hails from Kaloor - had gone to Oddanchatram in Dindigul district.
"They left for TN by Thursday to visit families and friends and for business purposes. Unfortunately, they are staying back as they couldn't catch a bus or train to reach Kerala because of the violence that broke out in TN following the conviction of former CM J Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate asset case. In the case of Murukar Swamy it is not possible to drive down in his car as he could be attacked," said president Tamil Aikya Sangam in Kochi, L Sappani Muthu.
Condemning the violence unleashed by party workers, he said that they expected the trio to reach Kochi by Monday. The association said that TN government and bureaucrats failed to take measures to prevent the brawls. He was addressing a meeting convened here to condemn the violent incidents in TN on Sunday.
"All citizens are equal before law, and verdicts issued by the courts should be respected. Aggrieved persons can always approach higher courts. At the same time, the state government and bureaucrats have the responsibility to protect people's lives and livelihood as well as public property. Taking into account the practices adopted by political parties in TN, the authorities should have taken precautionary measures, including clamping prohibitory orders under section 144," he said.
