Dilkusha Girl’s Home has raised concern regarding some of the attitudes of some children living at the home.

Home’s superintendent Leba Laveti said monthly forums organised by the Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation helped the home managers discuss the challenges they face and device plans to effectively manage the home.

“The children fully understand their rights but they are misusing them,” Ms Laveti said.

She said sometimes they talked back and this challenged the staffs on the ways that could discipline them.

“Sometimes some of them just ignored us and not do duties that were assigned to them.”

Ms Laveti said they always try their best to teach the children the right things to do.

Minister Rosy Sofia Akbar said they would continue to promote child protection and welfare of children in Fiji.

“We want children in these institutions to become responsible citizens and contribute towards nation building,” Mrs Akbar said.

She said they would ensure that they attained good education so that they could find employment and become self-reliant and good role models for their communities.

“The Ministry’s portfolio for the first time in Fiji’s history is now officially recognising children, hence the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.”

Mrs Akbar said they now had an opportunity to re-consolidate, review and make amends to the gaps that currently derailed their focus to deliver better in this special area of services to children.
