Municipal Corporation of Nellore (MCN) officials are taking a relook at the Nellore Master Plan to create scope for holistic growth in the corporation limits.

The Master Plan was aimed at creating facilities to meet the requirements of the projected 7 lakh population of the city by 2030, but the city population has already crossed 6 lakh. This includes the newly added 12 villages in the surrounding areas of the city.

The officials have taken a close look at the plans drawn for roads, parks, play grounds and drains.

Nellore city had witnessed a linear development with residential localities and colonies coming up on either side of the Grand Trunk Road, Mini bypass Road and National Highway 5 running through the city limits. As many as eight link roads of 100 ft and 80 ft width have been laid, connecting the National Highway.

Road widening

Recently, it was found that only a 60-foot road link was provided in the Master Plan from the Golagamudi road point on the NH 5 to the Annamayya Circle on the Mini Bypass Road. While this road measures above 4 km in length, half a kilometre of it was reduced to 40 ft in the Master Plan. Now, efforts were being made to widen the road on this stretch .

“Whether it was a typographical mistake or oversight, mistake took place in the Master Plan. We have talked to the director of town planning and correction is sought at the government level. All such issues will be resolved to ensure a proper outlook for the city,” said Sk. Abdul Aziz, Mayor of the Nellore Municipal Corporation.

The execution of the lay-outs in the city limits was also being monitored closely to verify whether they were meeting the Master Plan norms.

At least 10 per cent open space has to be left in all the developing lay-outs to provide space for parks, play grounds and so on. As of now, development activities were taking place at 190 sites in city limits in an extent of 100 acres, said assistant city planner G. Vara Prasad.
