KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Corporation authorities are planning to set up more high mast and low mast lights at the Kozhikode beach to ensure proper lighting after the sun set. The civic body has decided to include beach as one of the location for the installation of the high mast and low mast lights.
The corporation has already held one round of discussions with the officials of the corporation to find suitable locations to erect the lights.
The civic body is expected to finalise the ideal locations for the installation of lights soon.
The civic body has earmarked a sum of Rs 50 lakh for the installation of high and low mast lights for the financial year 2014-2015. Another proposal envisaged under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) aims to erect high mast lights at hundred locations in the seventy-five wards. At present, hundreds of people thronging to the beach to spend leisure time with their loves ones have been finding it difficult to walk on the beach owing to dysfunctional streetlights.
V Vidhya, a resident of West Hill said that only few streetlights on the beach are now functional. "The installation of high mast lights at the beach will ensue that there is enough lights which will help to walk on the beach. At present, we are walking on the beach using lights of mobile phones," she said.
M Mohanan, corporation Public Works Standing Committee chairman said that Kozhikode beach is one among the many locations identified for the installation of lights. We are yet to narrow down the exact location for the installation of the light at the beach. The civic body is planning to set up high mast and low mast lights on all the major locations to ensure enough lighting after the sun set. Another round of talks will be held next week to finalise the various locations identified for the installation lights,'' he said.
