Two important chess events concluded a week ago in Bilbao. Vishy Anand won the 6-player Grand Slam Masters tournament with 11 points after 6 rounds (a win was awarded with 3 points).

Anand's victory must be a confidence boost for the Indian before his World Championship match against Magnus Carlsen later this year. Aronian came second in this event with 10 points.

In the European Club Championship club SOCAR from Azerbaijan won very convincingly, with 14 points out of 14. The 2013 champions, G-Team from Novy Bor in the Czech Republic, came second with 12 points, while Russian club Malakhite finished third with 11 points.

Last week I mentioned that this tournament gives many amateurs a unique chance to meet some of the world's best players over the board. In the following game 51-year old Dutch IM Manuel Bosboom took advantage of his chance, beating Hungary's No 1 player.
