Bhandup woman dies after jumping off train with 2 kids, 1 survives

Following a quarrel with her husband over food, the woman left home while he was asleep, boarded the Kalyan-bound train after midnight, and jumped out with the kids; 3-yr-old who survived admitted to Rajawadi.

A 30-year-old woman allegedly jumped off a moving train with her two young children at Bhandup shortly after Friday midnight, following a minor tiff with her husband over food. While the woman and the elder child died on the spot, the younger one survived.

According to the Government Railway Police, the woman, Sridevi Gurusiddh Vader, boarded the Kalyan-bound slow train along with her kids, Omkar, 5, and Darshan, 3, from platform No 1 at Bhandup around 12:45 am. After the train left the station and gathered speed, she allegedly jumped out between Bhandup and Nahur stations.

Police said that around 1 am they received a call informing them that three people were lying bleeding near the CST-bound slow track. When they reached the site along with station officials, they found Sridevi and Omkar dead, while the younger boy had survived. He was admitted to the trauma ward of Rajawadi Hospital.

Police said that the woman, a resident of Gaodevi Road, Tembhipada, near Bhandup (W), was identified with the help of Omkar’s school playgroup identity card.

“We have recorded the statement of her husband, Gurusiddh Vader, 42, who is a teacher by profession. He said that on Friday night he and his wife had an argument over food, and that Sridevi did not have dinner. He said that besides that there was no major dispute between them, and that probably in a fit of rage she walked out of the home with their children while he was asleep,” a Government Railway Police officer at Kurla told Mirror. “The woman’s parents too have not come forward with any allegation or a complaint so far,” he added.

The police have registered a case and are investigating possible reasons behind the alleged suicide.

Meanwhile, doctors at Rajawadi Hospital said that post-mortems were conducted on Saturday, after which Gurusiddh claimed the bodies of his wife and son.
