China's Zheng Jie reaches mixed doubles semifinals at Asian Games

China's Zheng Jie, a twice Grand Slam women's doubles champion, paired with Zheng Ze to reach the last four of mixed doubles event at the 17the Asian Games here on Saturday.

The 31-year-old Zhang paired with Zhang Ze to defeat Thailand's 37-year-old veteran Tanasugarn Tamarine and Udomchoke Danai 4-6, 6-2, 13-11.

"It is a such lucky and tough battle," said Zheng, also former singles semifinalist at Wimbledon and Australian Open. "We kept encouraging each other as it is the first time for us to match as double players. It is quite necessary to play more carefully for every point in mixed doubles."

Zhang, 24, said he felt lucky and relieved when playing with Zheng.

"She is a Grand Slam winner and plays very solid at the baseline, creating many opportunities for me," said Zhang.

In women's singles quarterfinals, second seed Wang Qiang of China defeated Hong Kong player Zhang Ling 6-4, 6-4, but her teammate Duan Yingying lost to Japan's Hozumi Eri 2-6, 5-7.

Elsewhere, Gong Maoxin/Li Zhe of China, who won the silver medal of men's doubles in Guangzhou Asian Games four years ago, lost to India's Ratiwatana Sanchai and Ratiwatana Sonchat 6-7, 5-7.

Duan Yingying/Zheng Saisai were defeated by sisters Chan Yung Jan/Chan Hao from Chinese Taipei 2-6, 4-6 in the women's doubles quarterfinals. Enditem
