ASU's Cali Farquharson celebrates her ninth goal Friday, helping the No. 24 Sun Devils to a 1-1 tie with No. 1/defending national champion UCLA.

Pac-12 scoring leader Cali Farquharson put in her ninth goal and No. 24 Arizona State soccer held on for a 1-1 tie Friday with No. 1 UCLA, the defending NCAA champion.

The draw was the second major upset in as many seasons for ASU. The Sun Devils won 1-0 last year at No. 2 Stanford, ending the Cardinal 73-match unbeaten home streak and 44-match Pac-12 win streak.

After a scoreless first half at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, Farquharson maintained control of a through ball from Aly Moon to beat UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland 1-on-1 in the 49th minute.

"That was so scary because I didn't plan on dribbling (to) the keeper, but my second touch was really long," Farquharson said. "So I was like OK, I'd better take it to the side, and that's what I ended up doing."

The Bruins, playing with five midfielders in the second half, controlled possession and came up with the tying goal from Rosie White on a rebound in the 67th minute.

UCLA (8-0-2) had a 34-10 edge in shots and 12-6 in shots on goal. Moon and Farquharson nearly connected on a break in the first 10-minute overtime. In the second overtime, Farquharson was clearly held close to the box but no foul was called.

"I really like that we're bummed out that we didn't play better and get a win," ASU coach Kevin Boyd said. "We did fine until we scored a goal then it was oh my god we're winning and completely lost the plot. I spend all game trying to get us back on track. We never quite found it. What's good is we made it hard in every instance (for UCLA). They had some chances, but we were doing something to make it tough."

ASU ended its 13-match losing streak vs. UCLA and now is 1-16-1 all-time in the series.

Defenders McKenzie Berryhill and Madison Stark played the entire 110 minutes with Alyssa Martinez at 93 and Mckenzie Grossman 90 in front of goalkeeper Chandler Morris. "Our communication has improved so much from last year," Berryhill said. "We all get each other, we're on the same page. I'd really like to win against UCLA, but it's awesome we got a tie."

ASU (7-1-2) is unbeaten in its last seven matches and remains at home next week against Oregon and Oregon State.
