Bizman says cops shielding top doc in road rage case
A 23-yr-old businessman has accused the Santacruz police of trying to protect a top city oncologist who punched and dragged him on a busy Santacruz road earlier this month after an argument over a minor accident involving their cars.
Mazhir Mithiborwala — who was left injured in the incident and could have had it much worse when he hit an auto while being dragged with his hand caught in the doctor’s car — has said the cops have done nothing even after he carried out his own investigations and identified the man who assaulted him as Dr Anup Ramani, an uro-oncologist attached with top hospitals like Leelavati, Saifee, Breach Candy and Welcare, Dubai.

The cops registered a non-cognisable complaint against an ‘unknown person’ on September 11, the day the incident took place, despite Mithiborwala providing them the car’s registration number. An FIR was lodged only six days later on September 17 when Mithiborwala approached Additional Commissioner of Police Qaiser Khalid with details of the car’s owner, which he had obtained from the Andheri RTO office.

But despite all his efforts, cops have not yet even questioned Dr Ramani.

The incident took place when Mithiborwala was returning to his Juhu residence after a workout at the Leena Mogre Fitness centre in Bandra.

Mithiborwala has alleged that Dr Ramani’s Honda brushed i-20 at the Kotak Mahindra Bank signal on Linking Road.

He has alleged Dr Ramani got out of his car and abused him. And when he pointed out to the doctor that it was his fault, he was allegedly pushed and punched.

And it didn’t end at this. According to Mithiborwala, Dr Ramani then got into his car and reversed it and banged into his i-20 again. When an enraged Mithiborwala got out of his car and tried to grab Dr Ramani through his car window.

Dr Ramani drove off, dragging Mithiborwala for several feet before he hit an oncoming auto and fell on the road.

When Mirror contacted Dr Ramani, he said: “It was not me but the boy who ran through a red light coming from the opposite direction and almost crashed into me. When I admonished him for running through a red signal he started abusing me. At no point was there any physical contact. I am happy to cooperate with the police and let the law take its course.“

Senior Police Inspector, Santacruz police station, Padmakar Chavan refused to comment on why only a non cognisable complaint was registered initially the case and why even after registering an FIR on September 17, Dr Ramani has not even been questioned yet. “We were going to arrest the accused involved but he was not present at his residence when our team went there,” is all he said.
