Guwahati: Participating in a District Transport Officers’ (DTO) convention here on Friday, chief minister
Tarun Gogoi stressed on the increased use of technology in reducing road accidents in
Assam. He added that special discounts should be introduced for BPL passengers.
"A developed transportation system reflects a developed state. Today, the state has better roads and transport infrastructure," said the chief minister.
“At the same time, we have to focus on the safety and security of the passengers," he said, while addressing all the DTOs of the state.
Gogoi also stressed on the need for better transport infrastructure in the rural belts of Assam.
"We have to make the best use of technology and reduce road accidents. At the same time, strict measures have to be adopted against traffic violators. This is very important and will ensure the safety of passengers. We want to give discounts to BPL passengers," Gogoi said.
Accordingly, BPL and physically-challenged passengers will be able to travel on discounted fares in
Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses. Discounts will also be available for impoverished students.
The state has witnessed at least 5,070 deaths in 7,211 road accidents in 2013, according to official records. The number of fatal accidents is increasing every day.
The convention, which saw the participation of top officials of the
state transport department, was held at
Assam Administrative Staff College.
