LABUAN: Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching hailed SK Pantai and SMK Pantai for their groundbreaking application of research in teaching. She visited the two schools prior to officiating at the Labuan International Conference on Educational Research (Licer). Yap arrived at SK Pantai and was given a rousing welcome by Headmaster Jumat Latip and teachers, complete with 'kompang' and 'bunga manga'.

The highlight of her visit was the presentation of a mini orchestra by children with learning disabilities. Despite being born with dyslexia, autism and hyperactivity, they were able to play the percussion, xylophone and flutes to the delight of the VIPs.

The musical scores were the innovation of Mohd Azeem Charles, a teacher of the school integrated special education programme for such children. He used numbers to enable them to produce the melodious folk numbers.

"The scores are simplified to make them learn in a fun way. A defining outcome is that they improve overall in their studies and behaviour as music is therapeutic," said the teacher who had won several national awards for his innovation in teaching music to special kids.

He had branded his methodology as Kod Matrik Muzik which was patented as his intellectual property rights.

Later, Yap and education officials visited SMK Pantai. Under the principalship of Sahar Misron, the school had gone on to achieve many firsts.

It was one of the 10 schools in the country selected by the Ministry to vie for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, which embraces active learning and application.

At a press conference, Yap also paid tribute to Labuan Education Director Mistirine Radin for her leadership in inspiring research-based teaching.

She also acknowledged MP Datuk Rozman Datuk Isli for his interest and support and encouragement in the field of education.
